Rachel Ingram of University School Johnson City Shoots 70
to Lead By One After Day One;
Davidson Academy In Hunt For It's Seventh State Championship
MURFREESBORO - - - Rachel Ingram of University School of Johnson City shot a 35 on the front and back nine to take a one-stroke lead after the first day of competition at the Class A-AA state golf championship at Old Fort Golf Course. Ingram had three birdies and one bogie despite the wet conditions that were brought on by a one-hour rain delay early this morning. Her two-under par score is tied for the third best 18-hole individual score at the state tournament. Play was delayed for a little more than an hour this morning by rain.
Trailing directly behind Ingram is Seymour's Jennifer Davis and Creek Wood's Elizabeth Dotson, who each shot a 71 to finished tied for second place. Their scores of 71 are tied for the sixth best 18-hole individual score at the state tournament. Davis, a senior, entered the 2002 A-AA state golf championship as the defending champion. She also finished runner-up in 2000 as a freshman. She recently returned from the Junior Ryder Cup, which was held in Dublin, Ireland the week of the Ryder Cup. Dotson, a junior, finished fourth in last year's tournament and won the state championship in 2000 as a freshman. She previously attended David Lipscomb High School, but is attending Creek Wood, a new high school in Dickson County that opened this year.
Jamey Dillard's score of 73 combined with teammate Ginna Beazley's score of 75 to give Davidson Academy a seven-stroke lead in team competition. Their team score of 148 is the seventh best 18-hole team score in state tournament history. Dillard is three strokes behind the leader and in fourth place. Davidson Academy is vying for their seventh state title. It would tie them with Girls Preparatory School and Chattanooga Baylor for the most team titles in state history. They previously won six consecutive state titles from 1995-2000.
Anna Claire Daniels' score of 74 combined with teammate Mary A. Orr's 81 to give Christian Academy of Knoxville a team score of 155 to put them in second place and seven strokes behind Davidson Academy.
Rebekah Wilson of Donelson Christian Academy shot a 73 to finish tied with Jamey Dillard for fourth place heading into tomorrow's deciding competition. Audra Williams of Harpeth shot a 74 to put her in a tie for sixth place with CAK's Anna Claire Daniels. They are both four strokes behind the leader.
Smith County's Greyson Painter Leads by One Stroke After Day One;
University School of Jackson Leads by Nine Strokes
MURFREESBORO - - - Greyson Painter shot a 36 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine to give him a one-stroke lead after the first day of competition at Old Fort Golf Course. University School of Jackson's Robert Lents, Anderson County's Jon Fox, and Wes Williams of Christ Presbyterian Academy each shot a one-under 71 to finish one stroke behind Painter heading into the final day. The four will be the last boys group to tee off the number ten tee at 10:30 a.m.
Robert Lents combined with Bradley Pate's 72, Parks Williamson's 73, and Luke Fergoson's 77 to give University School of Jackson a team score of 293 and a nine-stroke lead over Christ Presbyterian Academy.
Wes Williams led CPA with his 71 and combined with teammates Clark Brewer, Robb Williams, and Campbell Brewer who shot 76, 76, and 79, respectively. Kingston finished day one with a team score of 307 to finish five strokes behind CPA and 14 behind USJ for the lead.
Bradley Pate of University School of Jackson, Mitch Brock of Marshall County, Jonathan Mount of Kingston, and Brent Long of Smith County each shot 72 to finish tied for fifth place, just two strokes off the lead.
Parks Williamson of University School of Jackson and Matthew Mincer of Christian Academy of Knoxville each shot a 73 to finish the first day tied for ninth.
Eighteen individuals had a score of 75 or better. Thirty-three players finished with a score below 80.
