Holly Cantwell of Morristown West Wins Championship On Second Playoff Hole;
Morristown West Wins First Team Title

WINCHESTER - - - Holly Cantwell of Morristown West sank a 21-foot birdie on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to defeat Bearden's Mallory Bishop to win the 2002 Class AAA state golf championship. This was the fifth girls' individual championship that has been decided by a playoff, the last being in 1997.

Cantwell, last year's runner-up, entered the final day of competition two strokes off the lead and tied for third. She shot a one-under par 70 to put her in a tie with Bishop after 36 holes of golf. Her score of 70 on the final day is tied for the fourth best 18-hole individual score at the state championships.

Vanessa Breeding shot a 160 (78-82) to combine with Holly Cantwell to give Morristown West a team score of 308 and their first ever team championship in golf. They have finished runner-up for the past two years. Farragut's Megan Cox shot a 160 (81-79) and Carolyn Levy shot a 166 (85-81) to lead Farragut to a runner-up finish in team competition.

Rachel Smith of Karns shot a 151 (78-73) to finish three strokes behind the leaders and in third place. Smith also finished in third place at last year's state championship.

Hendersonville's Lorie Warren shot a 153 (80-73) to finish tied for fourth with Maggie Cunningham of Knoxville West (76-77).

Tullahoma's Cody Hale Wins Class AAA Title;
Clarksville Comes Back To Win Team Title

WINCHESTER - - - Cody Hale of Tullahoma shot a 68 on the final day of competition to win the 2002 Class AAA state championship by one stroke over Oakland's Spencer Provow. Hale finished with a two-day total of 139 (71-68), the third lowest in state championship history.

Clarksville finished with a team score of 581, the third lowest in state championship history, to defeat Oakland by two strokes to win the championship. It was Clarksville's third team championship. They also won the state championship in 1983 and 1974. They were led by Alan Reece who shot a 143 (76-67). Reece's second day score of 67 is tied for the sixth lowest 18-hole individual score in state tournament history. Ryne Fisher and James Brannen each shot a 145, Jon Clouser finished with a two-day total of 159 and Seth Morford finished with a 153.

Oakland was led by Provow's 140 (70-70), who finished runner-up in individual competition. He combined with Phillip Pettit who shot a 143 (71-72), Zack Primm who shot a 147 (69-78), and Adam Wilcox who finished with a 153 (80-73).

Jefferson County, led by Lucas Tabor's 143 (74-69), finished one stroke behind Oakland for third place in the team competition.

Nick Bailes of Cleveland and Grant Leaver of Hickman County each finished with a 141 to finish tied for third place. Brad Robinson of Science Hill shot a 142 (71-71) to finish in fifth place.
