Jenny Kim of King's Academy Leads By One Stroke;
Baylor Vies For Eighth State Title

SAVANNAH - - - Golfers had to battle wet and cold conditions at the first day of the 2002 Division II state golf championship at Pickwick Landing State Park. Jenny Kim, a sophomore at King's Academy, shot a 72 (34-38) to finish the first day of competition at even par. She finished in sixth place at last year's state championship.

Taylor Bunnell of St. Benedict shot a 73 (35-38) to finish day one just one stroke behind Kim for the lead. She finished in fifth place, one stroke ahead of Jenny Kim, at last year's state tournament.

Catherine Hicks of Baylor is in third place after shooting a 78 (39-39). She combined with teammate Rachel Stuart's score of 82 (41-41) to give Baylor a team score of 160 and a seven-stroke lead over Brentwood Academy in team competition. Baylor is trying to win a state record eighth consecutive state championship. Beth Felts, last year's individual champion from Baylor, shot an 85 (42-43).

Brentwood Academy's Kate Austin shot a 79 (40-39) to finish day one in fourth place and seven strokes off the lead. She combined with her sister Liz's score of 88 to give Brentwood Academy, last year's runner-up, a team score of 167.

Holden Miller and Randall Norman combined to give GPS a team score of 171 heading in to the final day of the championships.

Baylor's Luke List Leads After Day One;
Baylor and MUS Tied for Team Lead

SAVANNAH - - - Baylor's Luke List, last year's individual state champion, shot a one-under par 71 (35-36) to take a three-stroke lead into the final day of competition. List leads Ben Schmidt of Briarcrest after the first day of the 2002 Division II state golf championship at Pickwick State Park. Schmidt shot a 74 (38-36).

Alex DeBardeleben and Scott Tashie of Memphis University School, McCallie's Austin Haynes, and Alex Beale of Briarcrest each shot a 75 to trail the leader by only four strokes after the first day of competition.

Reed Davis of Evangelical Christian School and Matt King of King's Academy both finished with a first day score of 76. A total of 20 individuals finished the first day with a score of 79 or better.

Baylor and MUS each finished day one with a team score of 309 to finish tied for the lead. Baylor is seeking their fourth consecutive team title and their tenth overall. McCallie finished the first day with a team score of 310 to trail by only one stroke for the team championship.
