Rossview's Taylor Cooper Leads by Two Strokes After Day One; Morristown West Leads Rossview by One-Stroke in Team Competition

CROSSVILLE - - -Taylor Cooper of Rossview shot a one over par 73 (37-36) to finish three strokes ahead of Cookeville's Kayla Stewart after day one of the Class AAA state golf tournament. The first tee times of the day were delayed for an hour due to frost at the Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain State Park, which is the host course of a state tournament for the first time.

Kayla Stewart's first day score of 76 (35-41) gives her a two-stroke lead over Morristown West's Shayla Forsey, who shot a 78 (36-42) and is in third after day one.

Bearden's Mallory Bishop finished day one with a score of 80 (38-42) to put her in fourth and one stroke ahead of Megan Cantwell, a sophomore at Morristown West, who shot an 81 (40-41). Bishop, a junior, finished in second place at last year's tournament. Megan Cantwell's sister, Holly, defeated Bishop in a sudden death playoff to win last year's title.

Bolton's Kellye Belcher, Columbia's Sarah Hunt, Farragut's Erika Thronton, and Cumberland County's Jillian Jones all shot an 83 to finish day one tied for seventh and seven strokes off the lead.

Shayla Forsey and Megan Cantwell combined to give Morristown West a first day team score of 159 and a one-stroke lead over Rossview. Rossview's Taylor Cooper and Staci Lynch combined to give them a team score of 160 heading into the final day of competition.

Morristown West won their first state golf title last year and finished runner-up the previous year.

Houston, led by Lauren Nelms' 84 (45-39) and Melissa Rosloniec's 85 (41-44) is ten strokes off the lead and in third place with a team score of 169.

Brandon Burris of White House and Blake Lannom of Hendersonville Tied For Lead After Day One; Clarksville Leads Science Hill by One Stroke for Team Title

CROSSVILLE- - - White House's Brandon Burris shot a 69 (35-34) to finish day one tied with Hendersonville's Blake Lannom, who also shot a 69 (36-33). The first tee times of the day were delayed for an hour due to frost at the Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain State Park, which is the host course of a state tournament for the first time.

Ryne Fisher of Clarksville shot a two under par 70 (33-37) to finish day one in third place and just one stroke behind the leaders. He combined with teammates Alan Reece, James Brannon, and Jon Clouser to give Clarksville a team score of 302 and a one-stroke lead over Science Hill heading into the final day of competition. Science Hill was led by Derek Adams, who shot a 73 (36-37) to finish day one tied for tenth place with Jason Millard of Riverdale. Adams combined with teammates Chris Wynne (74), Blake Howard (77), and Brad Robinson (79) to give Science Hill a first day team score of 303.

Clarksville is the defending champion and Science Hill won the championship in 2001, with Clarksville finishing as runner-up that year.

Bud Reynolds of Knoxville West and Jonathan Hodge of Jefferson County each shot a one under par 71 to finish day one tied for fourth and just two strokes off the lead. Peter Malnati of Jefferson County, Jake Scheffers of Greeneville, Micah McShan of Cumberland County, and James Brannon of Clarksville each shot a 72 to finish tied for sixth after day one.

Twelve individuals head into the final day of competition just five strokes behind the leaders. A total of 18 individuals are seven strokes behind the leaders.
