2003 Class AAA State Golf Tournament

Taylor Cooper of Rossview Wins 2003 Class AAA Girls Title; Cooper Leads Rossview to First Ever Team Title

CROSSVILLE- - -Rossview's Taylor Cooper was the only girl at the Class AAA state tournament to shoot two rounds in the 70's at The Bear Trace golf course at Cumberland Mountain State Park. Her two rounds of 73 and 77 gave her a two day total of 150 and her first ever state championship. Cooper, a senior, finished seventh in last year's tournament, tied for 15th in 2001, and tied for 35th as a freshman in 2000.

Taylor Cooper combined with teammate Staci Lynch, who finished with a 171 (87-84) to give Rossview their first ever state golf championship. Rossview entered the day trailing defending champion Morristown West by one stroke. Morristown West finished in third with a team score of 338.

Mallory Bishop and Jesse Maier combined to give Bearden a team score of 336 and a runner-up finish.

Cookeville's Kayla Stewart, who headed into the final day three strokes behind Cooper, finished with a total of 157 (76-81) for runner-up honors. Mallory Bishop of Bearden, last year's runner-up, finished the tournament with a 160 (80-80) for third place.

Erika Thornton of Farragut finished with a two-day total of 164 (83-81) and a fourth place finish in individual competition. Megan Fox, also from Farragut, finished with a score of 165 (80-85) to finish one stroke behind her teammate and tied for fifth place.

Jillian Jones of Cumberland County finish tied for fifth with Bearden's Fox with a score of 165 (83-82). Megan Cantwell of Morristown West finished in seventh with a score of 166 (81-85). Cantwell's sister, Holly, won the Class AAA individual title last year as a senior at Morristown West.

Clarksville's James Brannon Wins Class AAA Individual Title; Science Hill Wins Second Team Title in Three Years

CROSSVILLE- - -James Brannon shot a 69 on the final day of competition to give him a two-day total of 141 to win the 2003 Class AAA state championship at the Bear Trace golf course. Brannon finished two strokes ahead of Knoxville West's Bud Reynolds who finished with a 143 (71-72).

Brannon combined with teammates Ryne Fisher (145), Alan Reece (161), and Jon Clouser (166) to give Clarksville a team score of 610 and a runner-up finish. Clarksville finished three strokes behind Science Hill.

Science Hill was led by Derek Adams who finished with a 148 (73-75) to finish tied for 13th. Adams combined with Chris Wynne (151), Brad Robinson (155), Blake Howard (157), and Kyle Kochelek (162) to give Science Hill their second title in three years. They defeated Clarksville in 2001 by five strokes. Clarksville won the team title in 2002.

Blake Lannom of Hendersonville, who was tied for first after day one, finished in third with a two-day total of 144 (69-75). Brandon Burris of White House, Phillip Pettit of Oakland, and Ryne Fisher of Clarksville each finished with a score of 145 to finish tied for fourth place.
