TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Rich Sexton struck out 10 batters to help Coalfield to a 14-8 win over Lookout Valley in the first round of the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament on Tuesday.
Sexton pitched 5 1/3 innings to pickup the win. Brad Heidle pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to record the save.
Heidle also had three hits at the plate and Brad Byurse had three hits and drove in four runs for Coalfield (20-9).
Michael Reel had a bases-loaded home run in the fourth inning to give Lookout Valley (30-9) a 7-3 lead.
Coalfield scored five times in the fifth inning to take the lead and added four in the seventh to ice the victory.
Coalfield will play the winner of Tuesday night’s Mount Pleasant-Jackson Christian game at 5 p.m. at Grider Stadium. Lookout Valley will play the loser at 10 a.m. at Motlow State near Tullahoma.

Mt. Pleasant eliminates Lookout Valley

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Mt. Pleasant bounced back from a tough 11-10 loss late Tuesday night and eliminated Lookout Valley with a 2-0 win in the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament at Motlow State on Wednesday morning.

Jason Finerty and eighth-grader Alan Lindsey had RBI singles for Mt. Pleasant. Wayne Lindsey scattered six hits and struck out four to pick up the complete game victory for the Tigers.

Lookout Valley left two runners on base in the first, third and fourth innings and had one base-runner thrown out at the plate in the first.

Mt. Pleasant (23-6) will play the loser of Tuesday's night's Coalfield-Jackson Christian game on Thursday morning at Motlow State.

Lookout Valley finished its season with a 30-10 record.

Coalfield beats Jackson Christian for title game berth

WINCHESTER, Tenn. – Coalfield advanced to the TSSAA State Baseball Tournament Class A championship game with an 8-6 victory on Wednesday over Jackson Christian at Gamble Sports Complex.

The Yellow Jackets (21-9) will await the winner of Thursday’s Jackson Christian-Mount Pleasant contest in the 5 p.m. championship game.

Brian Conlon scattered 10 hits, struck out five and walked five for the complete game victory.

Rick Sexton was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

David Pledge had three hits and drove in two runs for Jackson Christian (30-7).

Mt. Pleasant advanced to championship game

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Mt. Pleasant broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning and defeated Jackson Christian 7-3 to earn a berth in Thursday night's TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament championship game in Winchester.

Jason Finrety had three hits and drove in a run and Trevor Brewer added two hits for Mt. Pleasant (24-6), which dropped into the losers' bracket of the tournament in the opening round.

Jackson Christian (30-8) got extra-base hits from Brent Lewis, David Pledge and Joel Hysmith but it wasn't enough for the Tigers.

Mt. Pleasant is to play Coalfield in the championship game at 5 p.m. An if-necessary game would be played on Friday morning in Winchester.

Coalfield wins Division I, Class A Baseball Championship

WINCHESTER, Tenn. – Coalfield won the first state high school championship in school history Thursday night, outlasting Mt. Pleasant, 7-5, in 11 innings to take the title in the TSSAA Division I, Class A State Baseball Tournament. Brad Heidle led off the final inning with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to break the deadlock in the 5-5 game that had been tied since the sixth inning. Ricky Sexton added an insurance run by scoring on a sacrifice fly by Josh Wright.

Back-to-back home runs by Brian Conlon and Josh Sheldon pushed the Yellow Jackets in front 3-0 in the first inning, but; Mt. Pleasant countered with three runs of its own Conlon and Sheldon both collected three hits for the winners.

Right-hander Rickey Sexton went the entire game for the winners, scattering 11 hits and striking out 12 in the extra-inning duel that was delayed late by rain.

Mt. Pleasant's Wayne Lindsey went 3-for-6 with J.J. Pierce and Trevor Brewer each collecing two hits. Cody Goins went 8 2/3 innings for the Tigers, striking out nine.

Coalfield won its championship without suffering a loss in the double-elimination tournament, whose finals were played at Gamble Sports Complex.
