WINCHESTER, Tenn. – Brian Passons scattered four hits in relief as David Lipscomb rallied to defeat Roane County 10-5 in the first round of the TSSAA Class AA Baseball Tournament.

Passons, the third pitcher for the Mustangs (23-1), allowed four hits over the last 5 2/3 innings and one run. He also was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Roane County (29-1) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the top of the second inning.

Ryan King had three hits and Brady Collins had a pair for the Yellow Jackets.

Matthew Griffith was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Mustangs with a double and two RBI. Trent Carden also had two hits for Lipscomb.

Bryan Crouse picked up the loss for Kingston.

Lipscomb will play the winner of Tuesday night’s Unicoi County-Jackson South Side winner on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) at the Gamble Sports Complex. Kingston plays the loser of that game at 12:30 p.m. (CDT) at Motlow State near Tullahoma

Unicoi County eliminates Roane County

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Unicoi County scored five runs in the first inning and held off Kingston 7-4 in an elimination game in the TSSAA Class AA Baseball Tournament at Motlow State Community College on Wednesday.

Josh Bailey hit a three-run home run as part of the five-run first for
Unicoi County  Jonathon Johnson scattered seven hits and struck out eight to pick up the complete game victory. Johnson also worked out of a bases loaded jam in the last inning.

Bryan Crouse had a solo home run in the third inning for Kingston and drove in two runs on three hits. Unicoi County (28-5) will play the loser of Wednesday's David Lipscomb-Jackson South Side game on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Motlow State.

Roane County ends its season with a 29-2 record.

Lipscomb holds off South Side

WINCHESTER, Tenn. – David Lipscomb scored six runs in the first three innings and held off a Jackson South Side seventh-inning rally in a 9-6 victory in the TSSAA Class AA Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at Gamble Sports Complex.

Kyle Felts hit his second home run of the tournament, a three-run shot in the first, to stake the Mustangs to a lead.

Scott Richardson added a two-run shot in the fifth.

David Lipscomb (24-1) will be trying to win its first state championship since a Class AA title in 1986.

Jackson South Side (23-8) will play Unicoi County on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Motlow State near Tullahoma with the winner facing Lipscomb at 7:30 p.m. in Winchester.

Unicoi County rallied past Jackson South Side

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Jonathan Johnson hit a bases-loaded home run as part of a six-run fourth inning to power four-time state champion Unicoi County to a 16-12 victory over Jackson South Side on Thursday in the TSSAA Class AA Baseball Tournament losers' bracket semifinal game.

The victory advances Unicoi (29-5) into Thursday night's championship game against David Lipscomb.

Unicoi County took advantage of six South Side errors in the fourth and Johnson slammed his 50th career home run and Josh Bailey followed with a double. Jackson South Side tallied six runs in the bottom of the seventh and left two on base before Unicoi County got the final out. Freddie Moore had a two-run triple in the seventh that pulled the Hawks to 16-11.

Keith Cowden and Matthew Coffman had three hits apiece for South Side, which ended its season with a 23-9 record.

David Lipscomb wins Class AA baseball title

WINCHESTER, Tenn. – Scott Richardson homered and doubled and drove in four runs to lead David Lipscomb past Unicoi County 7-5 for the TSSAA Class AA Baseball championship on Friday.

Richardson hit a three-run home run in the first inning and added a run-scoring double in the third inning for the Mustangs (25-1).

Brian Passons picked up his second save of the tournament, allowing one hit and striking out three in relief of Drew Townsend.

Unicoi County tallied four runs in the seventh inning and had the tying run at first base when Jason Brotherton struck out to end the game.

Richardson, Kevin Craft and Jimmy Morris had two hits each for Lipscomb.

Ryan Hyder, Scott Shealy and Jason Light had two hits for Unicoi County (24-10).
