Crowe sparks Science Hill to victory

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Brandon Crowe did it all for Science Hill in its 13-2 victory over Warren County in the TSSAA Class AAA Baseball Tournament on Wednesday.

Crowe pitched five innings and struck out seven while scattering three hits. At the plate, Crowe had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run during a four-run fifth inning, and scored a pair of runs.

Warren County (23-10) took advantage of Science Hill's only error in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on Wade Vincent's single. The Hilltoppers (31-8) answered with four in the third and added six more in the fifth.

Steven Morris picked up the loss for the Pioneers.

Science Hill will play the winner of Wednesday's Brentwood-Germantown game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Warren County will play that game's loser on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

Germantown rolls past Brentwood 9-1

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Germantown took advantage of two Brentwood errors in the first inning to score two runs and coasted to a 9-1 victory on Wednesday in the first round of the Class AAA Baseball Tournament.

Steven Kines went the distance for Germantown, ranked No. 1 in Tennessee, scattering four hits, striking out seven and walking none.

Greg Sirko had two hits for Brentwood, which is making its first appearance in the baseball tournament.

Germantown (34-2) will play Science Hill on Thursday in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Brentwood (27-5) will play Warren County in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m.

Dowdy shines in Warren County win

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Bret Dowdy drove in Warren County's only runs and sparked on defense as the Pioneers downed Brentwood 2-1 on Thursday in the TSSAA Class AAA Baseball Tournament losers' bracket seimfinal game.

Dowdy hit a two-run double to left-center field in the second inning to stake Warren County (24-10) to a 2-0 lead. The double followed two walks by Brentwood pitcher Doug Vincent.

Defensively, Dowdy leaped to catch a line drive off the bat of Brentwood leadoff hitter Andrew Reed in the fifth with a runner in scoring position.

Wade Vincent picked up the victory by scattering six hits over 6 2/3 innings. Vincent did not walk or strike out a batter. Geer Gipson coaxed Justin Jordan to line out to Dowdy at second to end the game with the tying run on second.

]Brentwood's Doug Vincent suffered the loss despite pitching a two-hitter. Vincent retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced after allowing Dowdy's double. He also walked three batters and struck out five.

Warren County will play the Germantown-Johnson Science Hill loser tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Brentwood ends its season with a 27-6 record.

Science Hill topples Germantown 7-3

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Johnson City Science Hill scored four runs on Thursday before the rain and added three on Friday to defeat No. 1-ranked Germantown 7-3 in the TSSAA Class AAA Baseball Tournament at Grider Stadium.

Science Hill (32-8) scored four runs in the first inning, helped by Richard Markland's three-run double.

Dennis Higdon hit a two-run homer and John Patterson followed with a solo shot in the third inning to give the Hilltoppers a 7-1 lead.

Science Hill's Blake Kaylor threw a complete game two-hitter with one
strikeout, walking four.

Germantown (34-3) scored a single run in the third inning on Steven Kines' RBI single. Adam Larson blasted a two-run homer in the seventh.

The game was resumed on Friday morning after high winds and heavy rain stopped the game in the bottom of the second inning on Thursday night with Science Hill leading 4-0. Germantown will play Warren County at 5 p.m. on Friday at Grider Stadium. Science Hill will play the winner of that game on Saturday at Gamble Sports Complex in Winchester and will need only one win to take the championship.

Germantown eliminates Warren County 8-3

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Germantown powered two more home runs and eliminated Warren County with an 8-3 win in the TSSAA Class AAA Baseball Tournament Friday night at Grider Stadium.

The victory advances the Red Devils, who entered the tournament as the No.1 team in the state, into a championship series on Saturday in Winchester, Tenn.

Ben Johnson hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to put Germantown (35-3) on the board.

Warren County rallied back to tie the game at 3-3 in the third inning on Chad McCormick's two-run double.

Germantown put the game away with two in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead on Steven Kines RBI single and Jeremy Hollis' sacrifice fly off losing pitcher Sean Evans.

Adam Larson hit his second home run of the tournament to lead off the sixth inning. Germantown will play Johnson City Science Hill, which defeated the Red Devils 7-3 in a game suspended from Thursday night and resumed on Friday morning.

Warren County finished its season with a 24-11 record.

Science Hill wins Class AAA Championship

WINCHESTER, Tenn. – Brandon Crowe pitched six shutout innings and won his second game of the tournament as Science Hill downed Germantown 8-3 to win the Class AAA Baseball championship on Saturday.

Crowe retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing a single to Ben Johnson that slid under the glove of the outstretched second baseman John Patterson.

Crowe, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, also scored three runs, had two hits, drove in two runs and walked once.

Science Hill (33-8) won its fourth state championship, which ties the state record held by Memphis Christian Brothers, Chattanooga Central,David Lipscomb and Unicoi County. The Hilltoppers won previous state titles in 1947 (the first-ever state champion), 1962 and 1963.

Germantown (35-4) broke up the shutout in the seventh inning on Jason Howarth’s two-run triple down the right field line. Howarth scored when the relay throw was errant.

Coalfield (Class A), David Lipscomb (Class AA) and Evangelical Christian (Division II) were the other baseball state champions crowned this season.
