Game 1

CHATTANOOGA -- Chattanooga Central’s Josh Scott scattered four hits in posting a 8-0 victory over Carter in the first round of the TSSAA Class AA Baseball Tournament played at Engel Stadium.

Scott also drove the first run of the game with an RBI single to center to plate Eric Oliver, who led off the inning with a walk. He pitched the complete game, striking out five and walking two.

Central plated runs in each of the first four innings. The big blow in the three-run third inning was a two-run triple by Andy Nelson.

Rocky Evans was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Central.

Carter’s Brent Hoskins took the loss. He allowed eight runs, six earned, scattered eight hits, walked four and struck out three.

Brandon Griggs, Daniel Sanders, Michael Gaut and Hoskins had hits for Carter.

Carter will play the loser of Tuesday’s Covington-Marshall County game on Wednesday at 10 a.m. (EDT) at Cleveland State Community College. Central will play the winner of that game at 12:30 p.m. at Cleveland State.

Game 2

CHATTANOOGA – Brandon Shelton’s RBI-double in the top of the eighth inning broke up a scoreless game and helped Covington to a 1-0 victory over Marshall County in the first round of the TSSAA Class AA Baseball Tournament Tuesday at Engel Stadium.

Shelton doubled to the wall in right to score Jeremy Kellum, who had a one-out bunt single. Kellum advanced to second when William Allen Wooten grounded hard back to Marshall County pitcher Jeffery Terrell. Terrell was hit on the bare-hand and bobbled the ball, forcing him to get the out at first base instead of a possible double play to end the inning.

After a delay attending to an injury on Terrell’s throwing hand, Shelton had his double. Gene Coltrane singled off the third baseman’s glove to put runners on the corner, but Terrell forced Covington starting pitcher Zach Cook to ground out to second to end the inning.

The Tigers tried to answer as Jon Coward led off the bottom of the eighth with a solid single to left.

The game was a pitcher’s duel from the beginning.

Marshall County’s Jeffery Terrell struck out two of the first three batters he faced. His counterpart on the mound, Zach Cook, struck out his first batter in the bottom of the inning.

Cook improved his record to 9-1 with the victory. He scattered five hits, struck out 12 and three. Cook did not allow a Marshall County hit until Josh Beatty’s one-out single in the fourth.

Terrell dropped to 13-1 despite striking out 13 hitters. He allowed eight hits and walked two.

The Tigers had two baserunners in the second when Ryan Derryberry walked and Frank Musgrave was hit by a pitch. Marshall County could not get a hit to score the run.

The Chargers missed a possible scoring chance in the third inning as Kayo Anderson led off with a single, but was thrown out at second trying to advance on an overthrow into the infield.

Covington had base-runners in each inning except the first, but could not advance one into scoring position.

Marshall County’s Chance Anderson led off the sixth inning with a double, but Cook came back to strike out the next three hitters.

Terrell matched Cook in the seventh inning.

Gene Coltrane led off the seventh inning for the Chargers with a double to right field. Dabney Maxwell ran for the Chargers designated hitter and advanced to third when Jeffery Terrell’s pickoff throw went into center field. Terrell struck out the next two batters before issuing a full-count walk to Kayo Anderson, who had two of his team’s xx hits. Terrell struck out pinch-hitter Jon Ashford to end the threat.

Covington (29-7) will play Chattanooga Central, an 8-0 winner over Carter, Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) at Cleveland State Community College. Marshall County (29-3) plays Carter at 10 a.m. at Cleveland State.
