Game 1

CLEVELAND -- Goodpasture scored runs in all but one of the game's six innings and Justin Brown threw a four-hitter to lead the Cougars to a 10-0 victory over Briarcrest Christian in the first round of the TSSAA Division II Baseball Tournament at Lee University Wednesday.

Brown also had two doubles and three RBI as the Cougars improved to 26-15.

Goodpasture had six doubles and a triple in the game.

Charlie Scott was 2-for-2 for Briarcrest (23-15).

Goodpasture will play the winner of the Christian Brothers-Memphis University School game Thursday at 12:30 p.m (EDT) at Historic Engel Stadium. Briarcrest will play the loser of Wednesday's late game at 10 a.m. (EDT at Engel.

Game 2

CLEVELAND -- Christian Brothers scored in five of the game's six innings and routed Memphis University School 12-0 in the first round of the TSSAA Division II Baseball Tournament at Lee University.

CBHS' Chad Lopes pitched a complete game, scattering three hits.

Christian Brothers led 2-0 after three innings then exploded for four in the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth innings.

CBHS (28-11) will play Goodpasture at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) Thursday at Historic Engel Stadium. MUS (18-16) will play Briarcrest at 10 a.m.

Game 3

CHATTANOOGA -- Cole Hoppe stole home as part of a double steal for the winning run to give Briarcrest a 7-6 victory over Memphis University School in an elimination game Thursday at the TSSAA Division II Baseball Tournament at Historic Engle Stadium.

Hoppe, who was 2-for-3 with two walks, had a two-out single to right to start the rally for the Saints (24-15). he advanced to second and third on wild pitches before Robby Donaldson drew a walk.

Donaldson broke to steal second, drawing a throw from pitcher Justin Sharpe (3-2). When Sharpe threw to second, Hoppe broke for the plate, where he beat the return throw.

Briarcrest had taken a 6-0 lead as starting pitcher Jonathan Phillips had a perfect game going through four innings. Scott Fletcher led off the fifth inning for MUS with a double to end the no-hitter. Fletcher later scored his team's first run on Joe Woodward's sacrifice fly.

The Owls (18-17) forced extra innings by scoring five times in the sixth inning.

Michael Liverance delivered a key hit in the inning with a two-run single to center that tied the game at 6-6. Two of the runs in the frame were unearned.

The Owls had a chance to win the game in the seventh. MUS had runners on first and second with no outs and bases loaded with one out but could not get a hit.

Matt Fry picked up the victory with 1-2/3 scoreless innings of work to improve to 10-2. Fry coaxed a popup and a comebacker to get out of the seventh inning jam.

Briarcrest will play the loser of Thursday's Christian Brothers-Goodpasture game Friday at 10 a.m. (EDT) at Cleveland State Community College.

Game 4

CHATTANOOGA -- Goodpasture jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for an 11-7 victory over Christian Brothers Wednesday to advance to the TSSAA Division II Baseball Tournament championship game.

The Cougars (27-15) will play the winner of Friday's 10 a.m. game between Christian Brothers and Briarcrest at 5 p.m. at Historic Engel Stadium. CBHS and Briarcrest play at Cleveland State Community College.

Justin Brown, Will Traylor, Ryan Boyer and Greg Whittaker drove in runs in the four-run second inning for Goodpasture.

Boyer was 3-for-4 for the Cougars with three runs scored and two RBI. Whittaker was also 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Josh Kelley and Justin Brown had two hits apiece.

The Purple Wave (28-12) tried to stage a comeback by scoring four runs in the fifth and two in the seventh, but fell short.

Mark Anderson, Jason Whitehead and Chris Godwin drove in runs in the four-run fifth inning. CBHS took advantage of three Goodpasture errors to score twice in the seventh frame.

Todd Dunlap went the distance to improve to 11-1 on the season. He allowed seven hits, four earned runs, walked six and struck out two.

Nick Bradshaw (8-5) took the loss.

Game 5

CLEVELAND -- Christian Brothers scored three runs in its last two at bats to defeat Briarcrest 8-5 Friday and advance to the TSSAA Division II Baseball championship game Friday at Historic Engel Stadium.

The Purple Wave (29-12) was scheduled to play Goodpasture in Friday's championship series.

John Sykes' sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Chad House, who had tripled.

Jeremy Jeter, the winning pitcher, drove in two runs with a double in the fifth inning.

CBHS had taken a 2-0 lead after two innings. Mark Anderson homered in the first inning and Chad Farr scored on an error in the second frame.

Briarcrest (24-16) tied the game in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Jonathan Phillips.

The Purple Wave answered with three in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Tim Lloyd drove in a run with a triple and scored on an error. Chris Godwin had an RBI-single.

Briarcrest tied the game again in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Clay Hoppe and an RBI single by Robby Donaldson. Hoppe scored the tying run on an error.

Game 6

CHATTANOOGA -- Goodpasture won its third state tournament of the 1990s and fourth since 1988 with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory in the TSSAA Division II Baseball Tournament Friday at Historic Engel Stadium.

The Cougars (28-15) took the lead in the sixth inning after trailing 5-0. Justin Brown's inside the park home run to the center field wall plated three runners to give Goodpasture a 7-5 lead. The home run was Brown's third of the season.

Christian Brothers (29-13) took a 5-0 lead in the third inning.

Mark Anderson hit a grand slam over the wall in left field and into the street to give the Purple Wave a 4-0 lead. Anderson's 10th home run, and second of the day, was estimated to have traveled almost 400 feet.

Tim Lloyd scored the final run when John Sykes reached on an error.

Goodpastured started chipping away at the Wave's lead with three runs in the fifth inning.

Ryan Boyer drove in a pair of runs with a single to center with the bases loaded. Joe Knox, who was running with the count full and two outs, scored when the centerfielder's throw home went to the backstop behind home plate.

Miles Calvert improved to 5-3 on the season for the Cougars. He allowed six hits, six runs (five earned), walked four and struck out four. Boyer picked up his second save of the season, striking out one and allowing one hit over 1-1/3 innings.

Lynn Shaw took the loss and dropped to 5-3. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits, three walks while striking out two.

The Cougars won state championships in 1988, 1995 and 1997.
