MAY WOOD AND BRANDT SNEDEKER WIN DIVISION II STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

MT. JULIET- - -May Wood of Baylor shot a 151 and Brandt Snedeker of Montgomery Bell Academy shot a 142 to win the individual titles at the Division II state golf tournament at Pine Creek Golf Course. This is the first championship won by both golfers.

Wood, who is only a freshman, shot a 72 on the final day of competition to finish four strokes ahead of sophomore Brooke Hixon of Girls Preparatory School. Both girls have a good chance of returning to the state tournament again.

Margaret Horton of Brentwood Academy finished third with a score of 158. Randi Belisimo of Hutchison finished fourth with a 163.

Not only did Wood win the individual title, but she also combined with teammate Kate May to give Baylor the state championship with a score of 325. This is the fourth consecutive state title that Baylor has won. Girls Preparatory School, who finished third with a score of 328, is the only school to have more state golf titles (7) than Baylor.

St. Mary’s finished in second place for the second year in a row. Joni Gossett, last year’s runner-up in individual competition, and Maggie Smoot combined for a team score of 325.

Defending state champion Brandt Snedeker shot a 71 two days in a row to defeat Ben James of Memphis University School by one stroke. Snedeker had the same score he had last year (142) to win the state championship.

Two sets of brothers finished in the top ten to earn all-state honors. From Memphis Christian Brothers, Nicklaus Canale finished third overall with a 145. His brother Ford finished with a 148. From Father Ryan High School, Matt Gallant finished one stroke ahead of his brother Michael with a 146.

Memphis Christian Brothers defeated Memphis University School by ten strokes to win their second straight state championship by shooting a 580. Father Ryan finished in third place just two strokes behind MUS with a score of 592.
