Kingston Defeats Marshall County To Capture State Title;
Joey Morefield Birdies Playoff Hole To Win His Second State Title

Joey Morefield of Marshall County and Jeff Page of Jackson Christian were tied with a score of 145 at the end of 36 holes. Morefield birdied the first playoff hole to capture his second state title. He shot a 147 to win his first championship in 1997.

Polk Brown of Kingston and Chris Webb of Jackson Christian entered the final day in the lead at one under par, but shot six over par to finish tied for sixth place. Both Morefield and Page entered the final day of competition two strokes behind the leaders. They both shot a 72 to finish tied for first place. However, it was Morefield’s birdie on the first hole of the playoff that won the state title for him.

Morefield’s championship effort was not enough to lead Marshall County to their third straight title. Last year’s runner-up, Kingston, defeated Marshall County by three strokes to claim their first state golf championship. Kingston’s score of 598 was the seventh best in state history. They were led by Scott Helle, who shot two under par on the final day to finish with a two-day total of 148.

Jackson Christian finished with a team score of 619 to put them in third place. Hume Fogg was a distant fourth with a score of 646.
