HALL OF CHAMPIONS STEERING COMMITTEE MINUTES

August 15, 2007

Hermitage, Tennessee

The TSSAA Hall of Champions Steering Committee met on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at the TSSAA office building in Hermitage.  The meeting began at 9:00 a.m. and adjourned at approximately 12:00 p.m.

  1. Roll Call

The committee members present were:  Lynn Brown (East), Catherine Neely (East), Gene Beck (Middle), Wayne Hobbs (Middle), Carolyn Ridley (Middle), Faye Osteen (West), and Billy Schrivner (West).  Presiding over the meeting was Ronnie Carter, Committee President, and Heather Carter, member of the Hall of Champions staff.

  1. Approved minutes of August 2006 meeting

  1. Mr. Ronnie Carter went over the Hall of Champions Financial Review for the 2006 – 2007 school year.

  1. A discussion on Hall of Champions games and the role of the official in those games took place.  Currently, the game fee for officials working in a TSSAA Hall of Champions basketball game has been reduced to $25.00 per game, and the amount taken in from schools is 80% of its gross gate.

Schrivner-Beck:  To recommend to the TSSAA Board of Control to reinstate regular game fees for officials working the Hall of Champions basketball games, and to reduce the percentage taken from a schools’ gross gate from 80% to 75%.

Rationale:  The feeling of the committee is that these changes along with the announcements of what will be taking place during the coming year will create a better atmosphere for the Hall of Champions games.

  1. TSSAA Hall of Fame Directory

It was decided that the Hall of Fame Directory continue to be printed on an annual basis and presented each year at the Hall of Fame luncheon.  No changes were made to the directory format.

  1. TSSAA Hall of Fame Luncheon

The format and location of the TSSAA Hall of Fame luncheon was discussed.  It was agreed upon that 2008 will more than likely be the last year the luncheon will be held in the James Union Building.  We will explore further options, including the Convention Center in Murfreesboro.

It was unanimously decided upon that the luncheon should remain in conjunction with the Boys State Basketball Tournament as it has in the past.

  1. Hall of Champions Exhibit

We discussed plans to work with 1220 Exhibits, Inc. to create a Hall of Champions Exhibit.  The following are key components we would like to see in the exhibit if possible:

    1. TSSAA Hall of Fame—should be focal point of exhibit
    2. Records / Team Photos—post TSSAA records and past state champions, possibly along with team photo
    3. Interactive Area—game show, trivia
    4. Recognition of Athletes / Teams—Recognizing tops in the state in different categories (i. e. “Top 50 Boys Golfers; Top 25 Girls Basketball teams)
    5. Recognition of Special Events—changes based on current happenings, special celebrations, etc. (i. e. recognizing 50th anniversary of basketball state championship teams)
    6. Recognition of Schools—honor schools that no longer exist, as well as the schools that are in TSSAA today

We anticipate having plans and drawings on paper by September 15.  The drawings will be presented to the committee, taken to administrator’s meetings, and possibly published in the TSSAA News. If all goes according to plan, the exhibit will be unveiled in March at the State Basketball Championships.
