TMSAA Minutes

February 14, 2007

The Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association held its second meeting of the school year on Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at the TSSAA office in Hermitage.  Committee members in attendance were Robert Cole, Chic Nute, Vic King, Don Freundenthal, and Michael Carter.

The committee was presented with the current membership list for approval.  Eight schools applied for first time membership into the association.  This brings the current membership to 296 member schools.

Committee members decided on the topics to be discussed with our Athletic Directors during the TMSAA Forum at the Athletic Directors’ Conference on April 24th.  The conference will be held at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin, TN.  The topics that will be discussed are as follows:

1.     Football Jerseys

2.     Area and Sectional Basketball

3.     Use of Registered TSSAA Officials

4.     Practice During Regular Hours of any School Day

With the proposed Sports Calendar changes in high school being studied by the Legislative Council, the committee revisited the TMSAA Calendar.  Open facilities, weight lifting and conditioning, off-season practice, summer practice, and the number of regular season games being played were discussed.  The committee decided to monitor this situation carefully and make adjustments, if necessary.

Official fees for TMSAA member schools were discussed in detail.  The committee decided not to put together a “Proposed Official Fee Schedule.”  Official fees for each sport will still be left up to the local assigning officer and the administration of the host school.  At the present time, this approach is more beneficial to all schools.

Committee members discussed the proposal which may be adopted by the Legislative Council for the TSSAA Sports Calendar, which states the following:

All practice during regular hours of any school day shall conform to the same rules, regulations, and seasons as corresponding athletic practice outside the school day under the TSSAA Calendar.

After much discussion, the committee voted to ask the Legislative Council to adopt the same rule for all TMSAA member schools beginning with the 2007-08 school year if it is adopted as a part of the TSSAA Sports Calendar.
